Of the total population, 623.7 million are males and 586.5 million are females.
Releasing the report, the Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Dr. C. Chandramauli said the country’s population growth in 2011 is 17.64 per cent in comparison to 21.15 per cent in 2001.

Current Population of India - India, with 1,210,000,000 (1.21 billion) people is the second most populous country in the world, while China is on the top with over 1,350,044,605 (1.35 billion) people. The figures show that India represents almost 17.31% of the world's population, which means one out of six people on this planet live in India. Although, the crown of the world's most populous country is on China's head for decades, India is all set to take the numero UNO position        
by 2030. With the population growth rate at 1.58%, India is predicted to have more than 1.53 billion people by the end of  2030.
                                                       India's effective literacy rate has recorded a 9.2 percent rise to reach 74.04 percent, according to provisional data of the 2011 census released on 31st March 2011.Effective literacy rate in the 2001 census was 64.83% which improved to 74.04%.Interestingly, literacy rate improved sharply among females as compared to males. While the effective literacy rate for males rise from 75.26 to 82.14 percent marking a rise of 6.9 percent, it increased by 11.8 percent for females to go from 53.67 to 65.46 percent.
Kerala has the highest literacy rate at 93.91 percent followed by Lakshadweep at 92.28 percent. Bihar is at the bottom of the ladder with literacy rate of 63.82% followed by Arunachal Pradesh at 66.95%.Ten states and union territories, including Kerala, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Tripura, Goa, Daman and Diu, Puducherry, Chandigarh, National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have attained literacy rate of above 85 percent, the target set by the Planning Commission to be achieved by 2011-12. 
 India's population grows to 1.21 billion people over the last 10 years — an increase by 181 million, according to the new census released, but significantly the growth is slower for the first time in nine decades.
The population, which accounts for world's 17.5 per cent population, comprises 623.7 million males and 586.5 million females, said a provisional 2011 Census report. China is the most populous nation acounting for 19.4 per cent of the global population.  India's population at over 1.20 billion is now bigger than the combined the US, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan and Bangladesh.Population of Uttar Pradesh (state in India) almost equals to the population of Brazil. Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most populous State in the country And 2nd Maharashtra with 112 million,
Lakshadweep the least populated at 64,429.  The highest population density is in Delhi's north-east district (37,346 per sq km) while the lowest is in Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh (just one per sq km). 
                   Big worry is the child sex ratio(for kids aged 0-6) of 914 female per 1000 males is the lowest since Independence.Positive sign is Overall sex ratio up by seven points since 2001 Census to reach 940 females per 1000 males.It's the highest in all states since 1971(expect Bihar,Gujarat and J&K).Highest sex ratio in Lahul and Spiti(1013/1000) in Himachal and lowest in Jhajjar(774/1000),Mahendragarh(778/1000) in Hariyana.
